Lisa Jane Smith wrote The Vampire Diaries as a trilogy in 1991. Fans wanted a fourth book, so a fourth was written in 1992.

In 2009, Smith started a sequel trilogy called The Vampire Diaries: The Return.

- The Return: Midnight (2011)
Smith had wanted to write another trilogy called The Vampire Diaries: The Hunters, but the publishers stole the series from her as she had signed onto it as "work for hire" in 1990, meaning it was never technically hers, even though she created it. The rest of the books were ghostwritten. She had wanted to call the books Phantom, Moonsong and Eternity but was able to retain the title Eternity after her firing and is writing a book unrelated to the series with that title. Smith stated that she intended to write another trilogy after The Hunters, but the series will end with The Hunters now.
